Celebrating heritage and fostering inclusive growth and transformation

Our Story

Nala derives its name from the Setswana language, meaning “prosperity” or abundance”. Often combined with the Setswana word “pula”, meaning “rain / currency”, Nala speaks to the transformation and prosperity that flourishes with the coming of the rain. At Nala, the imagery of a landscape transformed informs all that we do.

The rain from which the land and people will prosper.”

Imagery inspired by arts and culture permeates the Fund because cultural heritage is synonymous with community and speaks to our goal of transforming the lives of all those that we work with.

We also believe in an Africa that is proud. Proud of its past and proud of its future.

“Mapping the path to transformation and financial inclusion.

Our Logo

Our logo, inspired by braids and the thousands of years of African history they represent, perhaps best captures this ideal. Often made using three strands of hair, braids speak to our approach in combining financial, social, and environmental returns to create a flourishing Africa.

Indeed, the prism of agriculture is reflected by the rows of crop fields that gave braids their modern name “cornrows”.

In Africa today, many people, through no fault of their own, are born without hope and without liberty. We want to address this. We are therefore particularly motivated by the historical use of braids by enslaved women during the Transatlantic slave trade as a tool for communication and even creating maps to escape.

Such bravery serves as a powerful reminder of the link between heritage and freedom. At Nala, we wish to emulate this incredible spirit and map the path to a brighter future.

Our Sustainability Approach

AGRICULTURE:
A PRISM FOR PROMOTING THE UN SDGS IN THE MEDIUM TO LONG TERM.

Nana is focused on developing sustainable agriculture assets that are both innovative and modelled towards long-term growth. Short-term gains are not sufficient when long-term sustainability can be pursued.

Understanding the interconnectedness of all things, we strive to use the agriculture sector as a stage for addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Transformation requires a diverse and bold approach.

To provide investors with sustainable financial returns while mitigating socio-systemic risk, we identified four strategic pillars:

Sustainability

We strive for sustainability in everything that we do from a financial, social, environmental and governance perspective.

Climate Change Risk

The Fund seeks to responsibly manage and use natural resources (water, biodiversity, land, and energy) by promoting appropriate agriculture practices.

Technology

We incorporate technologies such as AI, Robotics, Big-Data Analytics, Geo-mapping and Internet of Things across our Agri-value chains, to improve efficiencies and productivity.

Social Impact

We recognize that ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with strategies that build economic growth and address a range of social needs.

Nala Capital Partners

Nala is a specialised Food Systems Impact Fund restoring dignity to the African continent through the fusion of financial, social, and environmental returns.
